This is my book. I almost hate calling it a "children's book" because I think adults can benefit from it, too. I feel like we've forgotten a lot of what we were taught when we were little ourselves. Feel free to SHARE it or pass it around on other media. Print it off and make a book out of it with your kids if you like. I usually rail against the internet for ripping me off, but with this, I'm turning my back.
I wrote "Tommy Sayre the Bug Slayer" about eight years ago when the bottom dropped out of our economy. It was inspired by my oldest daughter when we were playing outside in the lush, rural Missouri summer. I noticed her stomping on the ants that used our sidewalk as a superhighway. I had what I guess could only be called an "epiphany".
I explained to her the life of an ant: what they were doing, what their homes were like, and mostly just that they were trying to live their lives and her senseless stomping was not making that very easy. I just really sat down and talked to her about what life was, how precious of a gift it was and taking it from ANY creature was serious. It wasn't pretend. She's displayed a remarkable respect for ALL life ever since. Sow as many seeds of kindness as you can, because they always grow something exceptional.
"Tommy Sayre" is about empathy and changing attitudes. I hope the symbolism shows through. It's my hopeful apotheosis of humanity. It had to come out now even if I don't make any money from it. Trust me, we need the money. The world has never been kind to living, nobody artists.
"Tommy" has never been submitted for publishing. There are a number of reasons for this: the writing has some hitches in it, grammatical errors, punctuation, layout issues in the illustration, etc. The biggest hitch, though, was confidence. I've never had the confidence in my writing that I have in painting and illustration. So, it has sat in a box: The digital files left untouched despite my many claims I was going to use my more developed skills to tweak things. I'm presenting them here, raw, as they were when I first put this together in 2009. The only addition is the copyright and dedication page.
I just feel like the world could use this right now. I don't know if it's good or if it can really change anything, but my girls liked it. I hope you like it, too. Peace.
